Partner Profile: eir and Special Olympics Ireland, Proud Partners Since 1985
For nearly four decades, eir has proudly partnered with Special Olympics Ireland, making it the longest-running corporate-charity partnership in the country. Since 1985, eir has played a pivotal role in supporting Special Olympics Ireland’s mission: empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to experience the transformative power of sport. Through this enduring partnership, eir has helped shape a culture of inclusion, providing opportunities for thousands of athletes to thrive physically, mentally, and socially.
With almost 8,000 athletes participating in 262 clubs nationwide, Special Olympics Ireland fosters community, teamwork, and pride. Every four years, this journey reaches its pinnacle as Irish athletes represent their country at the World Games—an achievement made possible through the unwavering support of partners like eir.
A Legacy of Support Since 1985
eir’s partnership with Special Olympics Ireland goes beyond sponsorship; it’s a collaboration rooted in shared values and goals. eir has continually championed the potential of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the role sport plays in unlocking that potential. This partnership is a testament to eir’s commitment to fostering community connection and inclusivity, both in sport and society.
From grassroots initiatives to the World Games stage, eir has been there every step of the way. Whether at the 2003 World Summer Games in Dublin or subsequent global events, eir’s involvement has amplified the reach and impact of Special Olympics Ireland, connecting athletes with their communities and with each other.
eir supports Special Olympics Ireland through an annual cash donation, employee volunteering, and dedicated fundraising initiatives. As part of this commitment, eir also provides all voice, data, and internet connectivity services to ensure smooth operations across the organisation. The annual employee-led "eir Challenge" has been a standout success, raising over half a million euro specifically for the Young Athlete™ programme, directly impacting the lives of young athletes across Ireland. Through these combined efforts, eir continues to play a vital role in the growth and sustainability of Special Olympics Ireland.
Supporting the Future: Young Athlete™ Programme
One of the standout elements of eir’s partnership is its sponsorship of the Young Athlete™ programme. Designed for children aged 4 to 12 with intellectual disabilities, this programme introduces sport in a fun, non-competitive way, laying the foundation for lifelong participation and personal growth. eir’s support has been instrumental in expanding this initiative, creating more opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills and confidence.
Through the continued backing of eir, the Young Athlete™ programme has flourished:
- 41 clubs across Ireland now offer the programme, with 5 new clubs joining in 2023 alone.
- Hundreds of young athletes participate regularly, engaging in activities that promote physical, social, and emotional development.
- Special initiatives, such as the “Come-and-Try” festivals, introduced over 120 young children in 2023 to the joy of sport and the welcoming community of Special Olympics.
- The programme continues to grow, with regional festivals and events bringing young athletes and their families together in a supportive, inclusive environment.
The enduring partnership between eir and Special Olympics Ireland is a powerful testament to the impact that corporate and charitable collaboration can have on society. For nearly 40 years, eir’s unwavering support, through financial contributions, connectivity solutions, and employee engagement, has not only strengthened the foundation of Special Olympics Ireland but also helped transform the lives of thousands of athletes.
This relationship underscores the importance of inclusivity and community, demonstrating that when businesses and charitable organisations unite around a shared purpose, they can create lasting change. As eir and Special Olympics Ireland continue to work hand in hand, their partnership remains a shining example of how sport can empower individuals, connect communities, and inspire a nation.
