Last week, was a special day for Elva and everyone who knows and loves her, as she stepped into the spotlight at her very first Special Olympics competition! With a fan club of proud family and friends cheering her on, Elva took part in the Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP) School Qualifying Event held at the John Birmingham Centre in Glasheen, Cork.

Elva competed alongside 48 amazing athletes from St Paul’s (Cork), St Gabriel’s (Limerick), and Scoil Aonghusa (Tipperary), making it a joyful gathering of talent, determination, and team spirit.

The MATP is the only sports programme designed specifically for individuals with profound intellectual disabilities and complex needs. More than just a sports initiative, MATP focuses on supporting health, developing both fine and gross motor skills, and—perhaps most importantly—fostering inclusion, confidence, and community.

Elva’s participation marks a wonderful milestone, and her joy was infectious throughout the day. It’s clear she felt the love and encouragement surrounding her. We couldn't be prouder to see her celebrated, empowered, and truly shining.

Here’s to many more events, achievements, and unforgettable memories. Go Elva
