"Volunteering at the Special Olympics Gymnastics event was an unforgettable and exciting experience. As I arrived at the venue of Trojan Gymnastics Club Sandyford, the excitement was palpable. The athletes were busy preparing to demonstrate their skills and talents in the day ahead.
I was assigned to help with staging the athletes; this required the assistance of another volunteer. Working together, we guided the athletes around the various events within the gymnastics competition.
I had never been to a gymnastics competition before, let alone volunteer to be part of staging, so I was slightly nervous as I did not know what to expect. The nerves quickly dissipated due to the efficient organisation, excellent communication skills and constant encouragement from the competition manager, staging manager and event organiser. They made me feel capable and excited to get the day started.
There was also the sense of camaraderie and encouragement between the athletes. Every cheer and clap from the crowd and other athletes fuelled the athletes’ confidence, and you could see their smiles and determination as they performed various routines.
As a volunteer, although we had been assigned specific roles, there was a lot more involved than just that - and it was a great experience to be able to listen, learn and engage with athletes, coaches and other volunteers.
The joy was contagious and infectious. Whether an athlete completed a perfect routine or not, they were met with applause and cheers from the crowd. It wasn’t about winning or losing—it was about self-improvement, perseverance, and the pride that came from participating in something special. The athletes consistently showed eagerness, excitement and strength, supported by nurturing and positivity from all coaches. Every success big or small was celebrated.
By the end of the day, I was filled with a sense of gratitude. The experience highlighted the importance of inclusion and significance of community. As a volunteer, we were never left stuck or alone. There was always someone willing to help and everyone worked together to be part of the team. Volunteering at the Special Olympics Gymnastics event gave me an opportunity to learn and listen and to really see the power and talent of all the athletes."
