Seven badminton athletes from Loughrea won two silver and three bronze medals at the East Midlands Super Regional Badminton Championships at University of Derby Sports Centre, England on 26th and 27th October.

The tournament was hosted by Special Olympics Derby, and was aimed at encouraging more people to take up the sport of badminton, following on from the buzz of World Badminton Day on 5th July.

Our seven-member contingent proudly represented Loughrea and Special Olympics Connaught, while athletes from England SO, Wales SO and lsle of Man SO all participated in the tournament. After nine busy weeks of badminton practice featuring two tough sessions per week, Special Olympics Loughrea athletes were ready to put on a show.

The athletes were divided into nine groups, and each group had its own competition. The event was a celebration of badminton and allowed for a range of experience, from athletes who were focused on the fun aspects of the sport, to those with a competitive fire and will to win. Along with the medal success of the Loughrea team, our athletes showed improvement from training to competition, and enjoyed the opportunity to travel and take part in an overseas event.

We would like to thank the HSE for its support and to the Special Olympics Ireland and Special Olympics Derby leaders and facilities manager. A special thanks to the volunteers who helped to deliver this great event.
