Medal Magic for Team Ireland's Alpine Skiers
Wednesday was a day of medal magic for the Team Ireland alpine skiing team, with amazing performances bearing fruit in brilliant results. The determination, training, heart and team work ethic has been truly inspiring!
The team began their second full day of competition with impressive displays of alpine skill from all six athletes. Each skier had two runs down their course, savouring the opportunity to show their technique.
Máire Connolly had a great run, speeding down the slopes for her Novice Giant Slalom event. Her parents’ pride shines through in this interview. Máire, her family and supporters were delighted to find out that she had won gold in her category - that's a gold meal for an athlete who has never been to a World Games before! Lucy Best made it look easy as she smoothly whizzed down the slalom – and another amazing performance gained her a gold medal as well. Watch her medal ceremony and reaction here.
Clive Healy took part in divisioning for the Super G and in the final for the Novice Giant Slalom. He was justly proud and happy with his own performance – and he won a bronze medal!
Lorraine Whelan put in a strong performance in the Intermediate Giant Slalom. Donal Brennan took part in the same event, and his brilliant skiing was rewarded with a silver medal.
The Advanced Giant Slalom featured Caolan McConville, who is the first Team Ireland skier ever to reach this division. He sliced through the slalom in impressive style, and the assembled family, supporters and coaches erupted when he ascended the podium to receive his gold medal!
