Election to the Board of Directors of a person who has a family relationship with a Special Olympics athlete
Special Olympics Ireland currently has a vacancy on the Board for an individual who has a close family relationship with a Special Olympic athlete.
As per Special Olympics Ireland’s Constitution, Article 7.2.5 (C), the Board shall be comprised of the following:
7.2.5 (C) one person who has a family relationship with a Special Olympics Athlete (unless the Board already has representation from a family member among the current serving Directors), to be appointed in accordance with Article 7.2.6.
As the current person on the board (who has a family relationship with a Special Olympics Athlete) is due to retire in June 2024, on completion of their maximum term of office, the board is seeking nominations for this director vacancy.
Nominations for this position are now invited from Affiliated Club Members of the Company and should be submitted to your Regional Committee no later than Wednesday 15th May 2024. Not more than one nomination to the position may be made by any one Member.
Interested individuals will be required to meet the criteria below as decided by the Board in terms of the required skill set and must be able to demonstrate that they are actively engaged in the Special Olympics Programme.

INFORMATION ON DIRECTOR ON THE BOARD – FAMILY POSITION
Criteria
Key requirement for this position is that the person has a family relationship with a Special Olympics athlete.
Other skill sets, beneficial to support the workings and responsibilities of the board, include knowledge/experience of the Special Olympics Programme, background in the health sector or intellectual disability, governance of voluntary & non-profit sector, or business areas.
Other Information
The term of office for a Director is two years from their date of appointment at the Annual General Meeting of the Company, renewable twice (i.e. a maximum of three terms of two years). The time commitment is generally as follows:
- A minimum of six board meetings are held annually, with additional meetings convened if required.
- Meetings may be held in person, hybrid or virtually.
- Meetings are held on Saturday mornings or on an evening during the week. Dates are agreed annually in advance. A typical meeting ranges from 2 to 2.5 hours in length.
An individual elected to the Board of Directors will be required to be (or become) a registered volunteer with Special Olympics Ireland.
