Spin 103.8fm DJ Brian Maher has successfully completed the mammoth challenge of running 5 marathons in 5 days.
Challenge 126 saw the young Dublin DJ run 5 marathons (126 miles) in five days is all in aid of Special Olympics Ireland. Brian set himself the challenge of running a mile for each of the 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens in June.
Brian set out on his 5 day marathon challenge on Monday 11th April when he ran from Limerick to Nenagh – a distance of 26miles. Day two of the challenge saw him run the 26 mile distance from Nenagh to Borris in Ossory. On day three he ran from Borris in Ossory to Ballybrittas. Day four involved a run from Ballybrittas to Naas and today he ran the last 26 miles from Naas to Dublin. He was accompanied on the final few miles of his journey by a number of Special Olympics athletes and Matt English, CEO Special Olympics Ireland. His marathon effort came to an end this afternoon on Grafton Street, Dublin where he was greeted to a heroes welcome from family, friends and well-wishers!
Speaking about the challenge Brian said “This was a huge personal challenge I set myself, to run from one side of the country to the other. Having run 3 marathons in the past 3 years, to run 5 in 5 days was unimaginable for me. However, the support I have received along the way has been overwhelming. I’m glad I have managed to raise money for the superb athletes heading to Athens in June and to generate more awareness for Special Olympics Ireland. If given the opportunity I’d do it all over again, just give me a week or so to recover first!”
Matt English, CEO Special Olympics Ireland said: “Running 5 marathons in a lifetime is something to be proud of but running 5 marathons in just 5 days is absolutely incredible! We are all so grateful to Brian for his dedication and support of Special Olympics Ireland. It really is a remarkable achievement and we are very proud of him!”.
