Minster of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring announced the winners of the National Volunteers in Sports Awards on Wednesday November 19th at a ceremony in the Aviva Stadium , Dublin. The National Volunteer in Sport Awards were started in 2007, headed up by the Federation of Irish Sports - which represents some 72 National Governing Bodies and 28 Local Sports Partnerships: they estimate there are now 500,000 adults volunteering in sport on a regular basis in Ireland. The winners came from 342 nominations and were selected by a committee chaired by Olympian Ronnie Delaney, representatives of the Federation of Irish Sports, the Irish Sport Council, The Irish Times, RTE and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. Special Olympics Ireland were extremely proud to have 3 volunteers receive this prestigious award. Current Volunteer Opportunities Available In Our Clubs RIGHT NOW!

 

 

**Please note that a general volunteer role will cover a number of tasks including: equipment set up and tear down; registration of athletes and volunteers; inducting new volunteers; supervision of athletes between activities; serving refreshments; supervising the tuck shop**


Galaxy Club Mullingar are looking for volunteers in Badminton, Swimming and Golf. The Badminton takes place on Tuesdays 10:15 AM to 11:15 at Mullingar tennis Club

The Swimming takes place Wednesdays 2.45 to 3.30 at the pool in Mullingar Town Park.

Golf volunteering takes place at the Driving Range at Cullion Mullingar. Volunteering times depend on the availability of the volunteer.

 

 

 

 

Introduction to Coaching Practices Course

On Saturday 6th April, 11 volunteers took part in our Introduction Coaching Course held in the Sligo Grammar school. This course is run in conjunction with Coaching Ireland and is the 1st step on the coaching ladder for volunteers involved in our clubs. Participants took part in a variety of theory and practical sessions throughout the day. Thanks to the Grammar school for their continued support and the use of their excellent facilities. 

About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. 
There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.
The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
