From 11th April  - 15th April, Spin 1038 DJ Brian Maher will run 126 miles from Limerick to Dublin over 5 days - 1 mile for every athlete on Team Ireland!

A Golf Development Day was held on Tuesday March 22nd in Doneraile Golf Club. This day was aimed at Skills athletes that may be intrested or ready for progression to Level 2 or Level 4 golf. 19 athletes took part in the event which saw them play 9 holes on the course. The day was enjoyed by athletes and coaches alike special thanks to all the clubs that participated and in particular to Doneraile Golf Club who hosted the event as well as our regional Golf co-ordinator, Michael Forde.

Retired and serving members of an Garda Siochana from the Bruff Garda District completed the Mangerton Mountain Climb raising much needed funds to support the athletes of Bruff All Stars Special Olympics Club.

There was great excitement at the City Hall on Tuesday 22nd of March as the Lord Mayor Cllr Michael O’Connell met Diarmuid O’Leary, Clodagh Kilcullen, Sheila Sheehan and Audrey Galvin who are all competing in the Special Olympics World Games in Athens this year. They were joined by Cork Rose Laura Mitchell, Cork G.A.A Star Nicholas Murphy, Cork City F.C Manager Tommy Dunne and Cork City F.C. player Gavin Kavanagh who all lent their support to the Special Olympics Ireland National Collection Day which will take place in the city on Friday 15th April.

Current Volunteer Opportunities Available In Our Clubs RIGHT NOW!

 

 

**Please note that a general volunteer role will cover a number of tasks including: equipment set up and tear down; registration of athletes and volunteers; inducting new volunteers; supervision of athletes between activities; serving refreshments; supervising the tuck shop**


Galaxy Club Mullingar are looking for volunteers in Badminton, Swimming and Golf. The Badminton takes place on Tuesdays 10:15 AM to 11:15 at Mullingar tennis Club

The Swimming takes place Wednesdays 2.45 to 3.30 at the pool in Mullingar Town Park.

Golf volunteering takes place at the Driving Range at Cullion Mullingar. Volunteering times depend on the availability of the volunteer.

 

 

 

 

Introduction to Coaching Practices Course

On Saturday 6th April, 11 volunteers took part in our Introduction Coaching Course held in the Sligo Grammar school. This course is run in conjunction with Coaching Ireland and is the 1st step on the coaching ladder for volunteers involved in our clubs. Participants took part in a variety of theory and practical sessions throughout the day. Thanks to the Grammar school for their continued support and the use of their excellent facilities. 

About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. 
There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.
The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
