Special Olympics Ireland is a sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability, but we provide athletes with far more than the physical benefits of sport. Special Olympics changes lives.
Special Olympics Ireland enables our athletes to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too. Currently nearly 8,000 athletes take part in year round training in our network of 313 community based clubs and services throughout the island of Ireland.
In March of this year, 91 of those athletes competed as Team Ireland at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. They returned to a heroes welcome with an outstanding 86 medals (30 Gold, 29 Silver and 27 Bronze) along with 46 placed finishes and many personal bests.
As we look beyond the success of World Games we focus on the start of our advancement cycle and look forward to the Special Olympics Ireland Winter Games next year along with many regional games taking place across the country.
